Does your security door installer have a licence?
Did you know that a licence is required to install a security door? Many people don’t.
If the person installing your security door doesn’t have a licence to do so, then it is highly likely that your security door won’t be as secure as it should be or secure at all.
In fact, the likelihood is that it isn’t even a security door.
We have heard stories recently of unlicensed businesses installing security doors.
Here is one such story.
A customer’s story
Recently, a customer came to us when he believed that the gap between the jamb and his two new security hinged doors was too large.
Upon attending the home and inspecting the doors, we found that the customer was right – the gap was far too big.
In fact, there was a 10ml gap between the door and the door frame.
As per the Australian Standard, the gap between the door and the door frame should be 4ml or less – So that’s a big difference!
We advised the customer that his doors had not been installed in accordance with Australian Standards, and it was very obvious the installer did not possess the required licences either.
The customer contacted the Western Australian Police Licensing Centre, as well as lodged a complaint with the Australian Security Industry Association Limited (ASIAL).
Upon inspection by the authorities, they too, confirmed the security doors had not been installed to the Australian standard. And upon further investigation, it was found that the company that installed the doors did not hold the relevant security licence. In fact, they weren’t even a security business, nor security door installers, but a glazier business.
While the exact implications in this instance remain unknown, it is our belief that the business would likely have been charged and received a significant fine.
What should you ask a security door installer?
This story is a prime example of why it’s so important to ask questions prior to hiring anyone because you never can tell! It’s especially important when the safety and security of you and your family are involved.
Manufacturing and installation methods absolutely must be adhered to ensure security doors are as safe as possible and are unable to be jimmied.
So, what questions should you be asking a security door installer?
Here are some for you:
- 1. Does your salesman have a Security Consultants Licence?
- 2. Does the business have a Security Agent Licence?
- 3.Does the installer have a Security Installers Licence?
